Though I do love routine and there are certain things I like to enjoy on a daily basis, to me a constant monotony—or “lack of variation”, according to my GRE vocab flashcards—can make my life boring, if not depressing. The last thing I need this year is to risk even more boredom/nostalgia for my years as an undergrad, so I am looking for ways to mix it up on a daily (or at least weekly) basis.

Here are some things I already do:

  • Mix up my meals. I have my favourite breakfast and lunch foods like everyone else, but I try not to eat the same thing two days in a row. It may seem small, but it gives me a little something extra to look forward to!
  • Vary my exercise routine. This doesn’t mean changing up the actual workout I do at the gym, but mixing it in with different kinds of exercise throughout the week—whether it’s a Barreworks class or even a long walk.
  • Always try new things. Whether it’s going to a movie at TIFF, trying a new brunch spot or checking out an exhibit at the ROM (I need to go), I’m all about having new experiences.

Here are some things I want to do:

  • Do a better job of changing up my outfits. I have a fairly sizeable wardrobe but often feel like I’m stuck with that “80/20” rule: wearing 20% of my wardrobe 80% of the time. I want to work hard to incorporate the rest of it and to mix and match the things I already wear regularly. I struggle to put together new outfits in the morning, so the only way I can tackle this is to plan them out the night before!
  • Experiment with makeup. I’m not about to get crazy—I have a fear of dark lipsticks and coloured eyeshadows—but, just like my clothes, I find myself using the same products every time. This isn’t a bad thing, since I’ve found a makeup routine that I think works for me, but sometimes it’s fun to keep things fresh. I’m looking into buying my first red lipstick for starters…any recommendations?
  • Update my hair colour – stay tuned!
  • Have something fun planned for at least one weeknight/week. Work and school can be tiring, but coming home every day only to change into your pajamas is kind of a downer too. I’m hoping to have dinner with friends, go to a movie, or dosomething else to break up the work week and have something to look forward to come Monday.
